IBM Forges Mobile E-Commerce Initiative

BOSTON (06/02/2000) - IBM Corp. has linked up with eight Internet services companies to create a global, mobile electronic-commerce alliance designed to help businesses develop wireless content and services for mobile phones, PDAs (personal digital assistants) and Internet appliances.

IBM is investing in support programs for the eight vendors, which offer consulting, Web design and integration services. The eight vendors are Agency.com Ltd., answerthink, Luminant Worldwide Corp., Organic Inc., Rare Medium Inc., Razorfish Inc., R/GA Interactive, and US Interactive Inc.

In exchange for support from IBM, the companies will create a percentage of their wireless Web software and services on IBM middleware. The percentage was not specified in a written statement today from IBM.

The companies will also conduct training, joint marketing and business development programs as part of the initiative, which is part of IBM's ongoing effort to work with other vendors that agree to use IBM technology. IBM's aim is to target specific market segments where it hopes to capture business.
