Daisytek sprouts WA warehouse

Consumables distributor Daisytek opened a new warehouse in Perth on Friday to cater to what it sees as a largely unserviced market in Western Australia.

Daisytek becomes the first national distributor to set up shop in one of the world's most isolated major cities and Daisytek managing director Asia Pacific, Paul Connelly, claims the move has been waiting in the wings for some time.

"I've been looking at Perth for a while now," says Connelly. "We've been hearing service is lousy [by all distributors] from the Eastern states for years. I mean, it takes five days to get anything over there."

The distributor's sales and distribution centre is located at the Osborne industrial Park in Perth and will stock Daisytek's core product range. According to Connelly, though, the company is also toying with the idea of bolstering its product offerings into more than consumables.

"We could distribute a wider range of products," says Connelly. "A lot of suppliers are looking for stock that is readily available, and we could bring on products outside our core range."

Connelly was reluctant to go into details about what areas this might include but did not rule out more low-end peripherals and "some software" as possibilities.

The distribution centre signals Daisytek's first foray into additional warehouses in Australia and Connelly claims the investment in WA will be quickly recouped with its offer of same or next day service. "This hasn't been available in WA from one supplier before," he says.

Fiona O'Connor, newly appointed WA sales manager, will head the warehouse having spent five years with the company in Sydney. Three other Daisytek staff will initially join O'Connor.
