GST drives IT job market surge

Demand for IT executives peaked last month as Australian companies raced to be GST-ready by July 1.

According to the EL Executive Index, demand for IT executives jumped by more than 25 per cent in May. EL consulting managing director Grant Montgomery said the increase reflects the imminent introduction of the GST.

"There has been a realisation of the enormous effect future tax changes are going to have on business reporting and systems," Montgomery said. "After July 1 both large and small companies will be embarking on computer purchasing programs to take advantage of the lower costs expected. "More IT professionals are now being hired in anticipation of these purchases." Montgomery said demand for executives had also been boosted by the recent market shake-up in stocks.

"Business was losing confidence in the future, fearful of an overall economic collapse as the value of new technology stocks defied logic," he said.

"Now some sense of normality has returned with businesses once again planning for the future and hiring higher-level skills to improve their products and processes."
