Win2K gets a security server

Microsoft is developing a security server that provides firewall and caching services for Windows 2000 users. The Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000 will soon be available in beta version for download at the company's Web site. The product is similar to Microsoft's existing Proxy Server, which is designed for use with Windows NT. However, ISA Server has more features and is optimised for use with Windows 2000, the company said. Detailed information on the product will be published at

AMD extends processor range

Advanced Micro Devices has launched a slew of processors, including high-end Athlons running at clock speeds up to 1GHz. The processors are based on the formerly codenamed Thunderbird design and feature 256Kbytes of on-chip, Level 2 cache memory. Running at 750MHz, 800MHz, 850MHz, 900MHz, 950MHz and 1GHz, the processors are available in both Slot A and a new Socket A packaging. Compaq and Hewlett-Packard have systems powered by the new Athlons, and other vendors, including Gateway 2000 and IBM, are also readying such systems, AMD said.
