International mining giant Rio Tinto is outsourcing the support of its technology infrastructure in a two-year agreement.
Rio Tinto has contracted the Kaz Group to manage IT services for its Australian corporate head office environment and is outsourcing components of its desktop LAN (local area network) environment such as the IT service centre and on-site support services.
Specifically, this includes 24x7 service centre support, support of the company's desktop equipment covering computers, printers and scanners; LAN support, support for all on-site file and print servers, transition and business transformation services to help convert the company's current IT environment to the proposed environment, and business continuity planning and testing services.
By outsourcing its infrastructure support, Rio Tinto expects the arrangement to deliver cost efficiencies. It is expected also that it will free up the company's internal resources to focus on its core business operations, Kaz Group's managing director Peter Kazacos said.
Rio Tinto's agreement with Kaz includes an option to outsource support of its IT infrastructure for another two years. The value of the contract was not disclosed.
