Cable & Wireless Optus says it plans to move quickly to take advantage of the recent alliance between SAP and Commerce One (See page 12).
"As the exclusive licence holder of Commerce One's MarketSite in Australia and New Zealand, Optus is in an ideal position to capitalise on the benefits of this new relationship and pass them on to our customers," David Stokes-McKeon, Optus e-business chief, said.
"This means that all companies running supported SAP enterprise software will be able to connect to this new marketplace suite without upgrading their internal systems," he said.
"For too long businesses have had to struggle to integrate their current accounting, enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management software with the online global trading environment. This deal effectively removes these barriers."
Stokes-McKeon predicted that in the next four years more than a quarter of Australian businesses would embrace ASP-based rental software systems.
Earlier this month C&W Optus announced an alliance between its parent Cable & Wireless plc, Microsoft and Compaq. Through its parent, C&W Optus has the ability to seed new applications quickly into the Australian market. At the same time it claims to offer solutions that have global reach and scale to the small and medium enterprise (SME) market, the corporate market and the wholesale market.
"By offering a targeted, yet integrated set of e-business solutions, Cable & Wireless Optus can deliver solutions not only within market segments but across market segments," he said.
Optus will continue to expand the application portfolio to SMEs and will incorporate the Commerce One procurement application into the offering, among others. "We are giving Australian businesses a one-stop-shop for their e-business needs while at the same time delivering substantial cost savings," Stokes-McKeon said. In the corporate market, the C&W Optus approach is to work with businesses to enable them to better manage their relationships with buyers, suppliers and customers. C&W Optus launched its B2B e-commerce platform, CWO MarketSite - an electronic marketplace - and Enterprise Buysite - an automated e-procurement system - earlier this year.
