NEC, Mitsubishi Launch U.S.-Based Monitor Company

BOSTON (06/26/2000) - NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems Corp. will begin North American and European operations next month, developing and marketing new computer monitors.

Its North American subsidiary, NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display of America Inc., is based in Itasca, Illinois, with a production plant in Mexcali, Mexico.

Operations will begin July 1, the company announced Monday. The parent company began operations in April.

NEC Corp. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. created the joint venture company to make monitors in order to press harder into the flat-screen monitor business, said Al Giazzon, vice president for marketing at the new company. Mitsubishi has a strong position in the CRT (cathode ray tube) flat-screen market, while NEC is strong in LCD (liquid crystal display) sales, like those used in laptop computers, he said.

CRT flat screens are cheaper, but parts of the market are shifting toward LCD screens, he said. "LCDs will become a more important display product, in terms of space saving and display function; they're a lot easier on the eyes in the long run," he said. "LCD is a core competency of NEC."

LCD monitors sold by NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display of America will still bear the NEC name in North America, while flat screens will bear either Mitsubishi's or NEC's name.

NEC Computers Inc. presented its most recent line of notebook computers Monday as well.

The Versa SXi notebooks will use Pentium III processors at 600MHz, 650MHz, 700MHz or 750MHz. The Versa SXi notebooks with 650 MHz and 700 MHz processors will ship after July 15, and those with 750 MHz processors will be ship after August 1. A sample configuration for the 650MHz model, priced at US$2,999, includes a 14.0-inch monitor, 128M bytes of RAM, a 12G byte hard drive and a 24X variable-speed CD-ROM drive.
