STOCKHOLM (07/04/2000) - Telia Mobile AB, the mobile communications service provider unit of Swedish telecommunications carrier Telia AB, said Tuesday it plans to later this year roll out mobile portals under the Speedy Tomato brand aimed at consumers throughout Europe.
The first localized pilot versions of the portal are now being launched in Denmark, Finland and the U.K., with commercial roll-out in those countries scheduled for later this year, Telia Mobile said in a statement.
Telia's ambition is to make Speedy Tomato Europe's leading portal for mobile services, which is why the company chose the somewhat unusual name for the portal, said Charlotte Züger, spokeswoman at Telia Mobile.
"We wanted a name that was easy to remember and there is also a lot that can be done with the name visually when we start our marketing activities," she added.
The Speedy Tomato portals will offer personalized services, including calendaring, address books and e-mail access via a mobile phone, as well as news and advertising from companies selected by individual users.
Some of the services can also be accessed over SMS (short message service), a technology supported by most of the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) handsets on the market today. Users with WAP (Wireless Application Protocol)-enabled handsets, however, will be able to access a broader range of services.
Telia is talking with several potential content and service provider partners throughout Europe, Züger said, to ensure that the portals will offer the highest-quality services available in each market.
