Informix Board Member Becomes Firm's New CEO

SAN FRANCISCO (07/13/2000) - In a surprising move, U.S. database and tools vendor Informix Corp. announced Thursday that the company has a new chief executive officer. Informix's previous CEO and President Jean-Yves Dexmier had been seen as the major force behind the firm's continuing turnaround.

"There was a board of directors meeting yesterday where they (Dexmier and the board) came to a mutual agreement that a change needed to occur," an Informix spokeswoman said. She wouldn't be drawn further on the reasons behind Dexmier's departure.

The new Informix CEO, his appointment is effective immediately, is Peter Gyenes, formerly a company board member. He came to Informix when the software vendor acquired data warehousing specialist Ardent Software Inc. -- the deal closed in March of this year. He had been Ardent chairman, CEO and president.

Gyenes pledged to continue Informix's strategy to move from its roots as a relational database vendor to becoming a seller of Net-based software, according to a company statement.

Informix moved quickly on the announcement, with Dexmier already purged from the company's list of corporate executives on its Web page.

Earlier this month, Informix issued a profit warning concerning its second quarter financial results due out July 19.

For the quarter ended June 30, Informix said it expects to report revenue of between US$240 million and $250 million down from the year-ago quarter's revenue of $250.6 million. Revenue worldwide will be essentially flat, according to Informix. Net income for the upcoming quarter will be in the order of 1 to 3 cents per share down from 6 cents per share for the same period last year.

Integrating Ardent into Informix is also proving challenging, with the company saying the task is taking longer than expected.
