WRQ is releasing software to speed access to legacy applications and integrate them with the Web.
The company recently announced the availability of Reflection 4.0, server software that lets end users securely and remotely access their mainframe, AS/400, OpenVMS, or HP-UX-based applications. The version has new AS/400 features as well as improved download speed that WRQ hopes will lure some users away from competitor IBM and its Host On-Demand product.
On the integration side, WRQ also has made changes to its Apptrieve host application integration product that includes support for additional programming languages.
Reflection has a component-based design that means users will only access those functions from the host they need - for instance, some users who just need a terminal display screen will download that applet and not other programs that could slow performance.
This allows the product to perform at least as much as 20 per cent faster than rival IBM's Host on-Demand 4.0 application, claims WRQ. For instance, Reflection could do an initial applet download at 9.6 seconds over an Ethernet LAN; Host On-Demand required 40 seconds, according to tests.
Additionally, the company has added an AS/400-based printer emulation feature that lets users print host data from a local or network printer; previously users had to rely on a dedicated host printer. Users also now have the ability to do SQL database searches directly on the host; previously they could only view data when accessing it through an application.
Reflection 4.0 can sit on the host or on any intermediate Windows NT or Unix gateway server equipped with a Java Virtual Machine.
