Staff Monitoring Software an Earner for NZ Firm

AUCKLAND (07/28/2000) - A system to keep tabs on your staff is becoming an export earner for an Auckland company.

Time Disciple Ltd. reports sales of its "time accounting" software to the U.S. and backing from computer giant Oracle Corp.

"Time Disciple enables a business to measure employees' time against projects or work activities, allowing performance, productivity and profitability analysis," says Time Disciple managing director Grant Hughson.

"This helps make costs and accounting more precise and results in boosted productivity," he says.

The software has also been sold to the New Zealand Guardian Trust, and is about to be implemented at the Land Transport Safety Authority. This follows sales to three large American businesses, a U.S. Air Force base and a Marine Corps logistics unit.

Hughson says the project has been commercially and technically successful.

"A new technical capability in Powerbuilder, Internet applications, firewall security and browser-based software was established," he says.

"Overall, the project has doubled our staff's technical skill level, which gives us a body of knowledge now that will successfully attract and retain staff."

It has also led to a strong relationship with Oracle, the world's leading database software developer, which will promote the product.

"Time Disciple could run on Microsoft and Sybase platforms, but we had to make it work with Oracle because many large worldwide organizations use this platform," Hughson says.

"When we did, it made a huge difference to our overseas sales potential by allowing us access to organizations running Oracle databases."

Technology New Zealand, part of the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology, helped support Time Disciple in developing its product.

"We wouldn't have made the sales without them. The availability of these funds was also very important because it created a method to obtain additional shareholder commitment to a very sizeable project when there was promise for the product," Hughson says.
