Lucent Technologies will provide $US300 million worth of telecommunications equipment and services through 2002 to Brazilian carrier Telemar, including switching wares, software products and billing systems, Lucent announced yesterday.
This is the latest contract Telemar awards to Lucent, which earlier this year agreed to supply a Wireless Local Loop (WLL) system to the carrier, according to Lucent.
Telemar provides basic fixed-line telephone services in Brazil's northeast region, whose 16 states include Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais and a population of 86 million people, Lucent said.
Telemar's plans are to have invested $US1.6 billion in its network's infrastructure by the end of 2000, according to a Salomon Smith Barney Inc. report released in June about Latin America's telecommunications market.
Lucent, which has 1,600 employees and three manufacturing plants in Brazil, is based in Murray Hill, New Jersey and can be reached at http://www.lucent.com/. Telemar is at http://www.telemar.com.br/.
