Navy Buys Computer to Track Weather

FRAMINGHAM (08/04/2000) - The U.S. Navy has signed an $18 million contract with IBM Corp. for a new supercomputer to track weather near its fleet operations.

The RS/6000 SP will allow the creation of the most detailed model of the world's oceans ever constructed. Ocean depth, temperature and even wave height will be modeled.
