Touted as an "entry-level" bookkeeping solution for small service-based businesses, FirstAccounts provides a series of features small businesses need to manage their accounts including chequebook, debtors, creditors, invoicing and more than 80 management and financial reports.

FirstAccounts offers an end-user interface for businesses computerising for the first time. It is designed to simplify the process of performing transactions such as entering cheques and invoices, selecting trading terms, designing forms, and keeping records of customers and vendors, according to the company.

The FirstAccounts Data File Assistant guides the first-timer through the steps required in setting up their business. Once set up, it processes professional documents such as invoices, statements and quotes.

In addition, FirstAccounts calculates GST and discounts if applicable, and tracks deposits paid.

FirstAccounts makes it easy to manage customers, suppliers or anyone else the user has regular contact with. Financial information, account contacts and queries can all be tracked. Scheduling a phone call, letter or customer contact is also possible. FirstAccounts is currently available throughout Australia. Its recommended retail price (with GST) is $219.

Attaché

Catapult, Attaché's new accounting software package, has been tailored to the needs of small but expanding businesses. This PC networked-based accounting software combines detailed customer, supplier, inventory and financial data management with ease of use and big-business functionality.

Catapult, the company claims, is especially suited for those involved in product distribution or require more sophisticated management reporting.

As Catapult was specifically designed for a networking environment, the software is based on a relational database that allows three to 100 users to access and use the essential information required without slowing down the processing system.

Designed to grow with the company the software has a range of functions and is scaled to suit a growing user base.

Catapult is also multitasking, allowing users to open and jump between a number of task windows without fear of crashing or slowing down the system.

Catapult operates on any Pentium PC with 32MB memory, 20MB spare hard disk space, Windows 95/98 (low volume users), NT/2000 (high volume users), Novell, Citrix Metaframe. RRP plus GST is $1999.50.

Humanic Books

Humanic Books 2 is an advanced software package designed to simplify financial bookkeeping and make it easier for small business owners to organise their businesses. It is targeted at small businesses where cashbook bookkeeping is required.

According to the vendor, end users of Humanic Books 2 do not need to know anything about bookkeeping or accounting practices -Humanic Books 2 guides the user through all the procedures step-by-step. These features are supported by Humanic Software's online help and manual.

All data in Humanic Books 2 is assembled and displayed in worksheets similar in appearance to standard manual account records.

Humanic Books 2 can be used to; record financial transactions and display them in a useful format; and has special functions to create charts and reports.

Humanic Books 2 includes a series of new features including support for multiple bank accounts and credit cards in the one file, a new reconciling tool for improved reconciling of bank statements, a function to enable funds to be transferred between "books" in the same file and more detailed profit and loss report capabilities.

Sage

Sage Instant Accounting is designed to handle all sales, purchases, stock control and order processing, as well as generating invoices, statements, reports and sales letters.

Sage Instant Accounting comes with a series of features designed to streamline business accounting process. These include password-controlled security of access,·automatic back-up routine and a data error checking system to spot and amend mistakes.

Other Instant Accounting features include: "Once only" data entry with automatic ledger updates, automatic invoicing, stock update and customer record prompts triggered when data is entered.

Sage has designed the software to implement upgrades and transfer of existing data at the touch of a button.

As the software is focussed on the SOHO market, the company provides single user, network, or Bureau License versions, to account for rapid growth.

Pastel's new SOHO product is a Windows-based, accounting program for the entry level accounting user that is designed to be clear, simple and uncomplicated so that a basic set of books can be run with limited accounting knowledge, and is designed for small businesses with one to five employees.

Pastel SOHO (Small Office Home Office) is also designed to be easy to set up, fully scaleable and network-ready.

The software provides end users with access to unlimited transactions so that they never have to delete history files to "make space" for new data.

Pastel SOHO maintains the strict accounting principles of double entry and correcting erroneous postings with adjustments and a full audit trail.

Pastel SOHO's Set Up Assistant is designed to guide esers through a step-by-step routine. Choose a chart of accounts to match the type of business from the multiple choice of charts available.

The software uses familiar formats. Easy-to-read input forms are facilitated with the transaction assistant.

Pastel SOHO includes features such as: banking and cashbooks, customers, suppliers, customer invoicing, GST compliance and inventory tables, easy to read reports, sales and purchases analysis.

The product's functions include multi-company functionality, which allows end users to run an unlimited number of companies on Pastel. The software also provides multi-level drill down, start at profit and loss, or balance sheet and drill all the way down to transactions.
