BERLIN (08/11/2000) - The European Commission (EC) is renewing its call for comment on a possible change of its policy toward IP (Internet Protocol) telephony. In a statement Friday, the EC said it wants to remind companies and other interested parties that they can still forward their views on the subject until the end of August.
Since January 1998, the EC has held that IP telephony is not voice traffic and hence should not be subject to the regulatory bodies of member states. The Commission started a consultation procedure in June of this year to assess whether and how to update the policy in view of technological and market developments.
A communication released on June 27 proposes "to maintain the main conclusions" of the 1998 policy.
