Reins Change Hands at Cable & Wireless

FRAMINGHAM (08/14/2000) - Cable & Wireless North America is getting another new president. The company announced Monday that Wharton "Zie" Rivers is leaving the company and that Alan Gibbs is taking over as president.

Rivers joined Cable & Wireless in October 1999 from Ameritech Corp.'s Network Services division, where he held the same title. Rivers took over Cable & Wireless North America after the departure of Dennis "Denny" Matteucci, who held the title of CEO and also left the company before finishing one year of service.

Gibbs may have better luck because he's coming up through the Cable & Wireless ranks, although he's only been with the company since 1998. Gibbs was most recently senior vice president and program director of Cable & Wireless Global Operations. When Gibbs joined Cable & Wireless with 10 years at AT&T under his belt, he was CEO of Cable & Wireless' Global Card Service business, which has since been sold.

Cable & Wireless North America has seen many executive shifts since it acquired MCI's Internet business just over two years ago. Gibbs is the fourth to take over the division that its parent, Cable & Wireless PLC, manages from the United Kingdom.
