With network software company SCO announcing last week it was selling its less-profitable arms to Caldera Systems, local executives last week added MUA and Express Data as distributors of the Tarantella technology it retained.
Both MUA and Express Data were already SCO distributors but not for the Tarantella technology, which the vendor has always managed as a separate entity and which analysts earlier this year espied as its best bet for the future [see ARN February 16, page 32].
SCO's distribution arrangements for Tarantella needed to be revised after previous distributor Memorex Telex was acquired in March by NCR who have abandoned it. MUA and Express Data will start marketing the new Enterprise II version of Tarantella to their reseller channels, effective immediately, and despite going head-to-head, both companies claim there is not a lot of crossover in their markets.
According to Paul McQuarrie, managing director of MUA, MemTel got out of Tarantella after the acquisition. Access to the product will benefit MUA's reseller community, particularly those focusing on developing and implementing enterprise solutions for their customers, he added.
"Tarantella allows a good high-speed Unix-based application to be available to anyone with a browser and an Internet connection anywhere in the world," McQuarrie said. "This product creates a whole new list of opportunities for our resellers."
McQuarrie said that any reseller with basic Unix or similar database experience will be able to resell the product and there are no accreditation costs or ongoing fees to do so.
"We are seeing special interest from our Caldera resellers who see a combination of Caldera OpenLinux and Tarantella as a key solution platform," McQuarrie added.
Express Data's software marketing manager, Shadi Sarir, said the SCO technology formed a crucial component of its enterprise resellers' solutions.
"Tarantella Enterprise II will provide our enterprise market resellers with the ability to instantly Web-enable any of their solution offerings and any of our customers' existing applications," Sarir said. "Tarantella will prove a key advantage in assisting organisations to easily become e-businesses."
