Toshiba will enter the server appliance market early next year with a server aimed at small and midsize firms.
The Toshiba servers will come equipped with standard features such as e-mail and printer management, Internet access, firewall support and Web caching. The company will also offer services such as installation, remote administration and device health monitoring.
Toshiba is forming alliances with several companies to offer features such as Bluetooth and 802.11 wireless technology, Web hosting, domain registration, e-mail services, Internet-based backup and online training.
New wireless software provided by Red-M will provide integration between the server appliance and other Bluetooth-enabled devices such as network printers, PDAs and Toshiba's portable devices.
IBM, Sun, Dell and Compaq have also entered the server appliance race in recent weeks.
