CA packs virus punch

Computer Associates new eTrust Internet Defense is an integrated software package designed to protect companies doing business online from attacks and security breaches, a growing problem for IT departments.

"The old e-business strategy that many businesses put into place focused on antivirus and firewall solutions . . . is not enough," said Robert Weller, business manager in CA's eTrust security solutions division. "As the complexity of threats rise, the complexity of security software needs to rise as well."

The eTrust Internet Defense suite "is what we suggest e-businesses include as they move forward in the e-business arena," Weller said.

CA's eTrust package includes six programs, which can be licensed separately or as an integrated suite. The applications can detect, analyse, warn, prevent and cure attacks, including malicious mobile code, worms, viruses or intruders and hackers attempting to attack an e-commerce Web site, according to the company.

The eTrust Internet Defense suite includes:

* eTrust Firewall, which enables companies to provide its authorised users with Internet, intranet and extranet access while keeping intruders out;* eTrust Content Inspection, which includes real-time attack intervention and automatic detection, blocking and notification of all types of malicious content.

* eTrust Intrusion Detection, which provides real-time, non-intrusive detection, policy-based alerts and automatic prevention;* eTrust VPN (virtual private network), which allows companies to keep their e-business systems safe;* eTrust Anti-virus (InoculateIT), which provides real-time protection; and* eTrust Internet Defense, which lets companies migrate to the complete software suite and allows e-businesses to take advantage of CA's risk assessment services.

Citing a recent PricewaterhouseCoopers study, CA said the damage from cyber attacks has cost almost $US1.5 trillion this year.

Weller said the suite can protect against denial of service attacks, the ILoveYou virus, and hackers and intruders who can circumvent firewalls and antivirus software.
