Apogee Software Inc. and MontaVista Software Inc. have announced that Apogee's Aphelion will be ported to IBM Corp. Microelectronics's PowerPC(TM) 405GP embedded processors running MontaVista Hard Hat Linux, a leading embedded Linux port. In addition, ports to several other PowerPC processors running Hard Hat Linux are expected soon.
Aphelion, a tool for developing Java-based embedded applications, comes with specialized optimizers for fast execution of byte-code zip files. It includes Sun's PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava VMs, ported to several embedded processors and operating systems. The company plans to replace the VMs with Sun's CDC and CLDC J2ME VMs.
Other components of Aphelion include a syntax-driven Java/C/C++ editor, Java and C++ class browsers, and debuggers of byte code and native code. All of these can be controlled through a GUI or through Unix line commands.
Aphelion is scheduled to be released in fall 2000; it will be supported on Sun Solaris and Windows cross-development platforms.
