The Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU) has secured a special Olympic allowance for about 4000 affected Telstra workers. As reported in last week's edition of Computerworld (August 28, p3), the CEPU had lodged a claim with Telstra for a $5-an-hour Olympic allowance for Sydney workers.
CEPU president Laurie Chalker said there was a lot of pressure for Telstra employees to be available and on time since Telstra was the only communications provider and main sponsor, unlike the Atlanta games where there were several communications providers. Chalker confirmed that about 4000 Telstra staff directly associated with the Olympic Games will receive a special payment of $400 at the conclusion of the Games. This payment is in the vicinity of the union's claim of $5 an hour for the duration of the Games.
