AustStor to offer LTO Qualstar libraries

Storage distributor AustStor has furthered its exclusive distribution agreement with robotics vendor Qualstar to distribute its Linear Tape Open (LTO) format tape libraries.

The agreement will see AustStor distribute a range of seven different Qualstar branded TSL-8000 Series Automated Tape Libraries that use Hewlett-Packard's (HP) Ultrium LTO drives.

AustStor is offering libraries containing up to eight simultaneously operating tape drives accessing 264 cartridges. The HP drives have a native 100Gb (200Gb compressed) capacity with a throughput of 15Gbs. This means at its largest configuration, the Qualstar libraries have storage capacity of 52.8 terabytes with transfer speeds of up to 860Gb per hour, and allows up to four servers to share a single library regardless of application.

Qualstar's libraries use the company's "loadscrew-based" brushless robotics which Lachlan McDonald, AustStor's managing director, claims are some of the best robotics on the market.

With AustStor turning its focus away from DLT to concentrate on AIT libraries manufactured by Sony, McDonald is optimistic about the adoption rate of LTO.

"Tape is quite simply the best product for the right application. With the window of backup in that high-end enterprise space always getting smaller, then LTO's higher transfer speeds will be good," said McDonald.

"If LTO proves to be reliable, and there is no reason why it shouldn't, then it could be big," he said. "We're very excited."

McDonald claims the company has just come off the best quarter in ten years reporting 240 per cent growth in revenues - soon to be boosted by four orders of SAN-enabled (Fibre Channel) libraries.

According to McDonald, the LTO libraries are available now and range from $25,000 to $265,000 depending on the configuration.
