Australia's New Tel Says Ni Hao

Australian Stock Exchange and NASDAQ listed telecommunications group New Tel has staked a claim on the net savvy Chinese speaking diaspora through an alliance announced today with web developer Nihao.net.

Through the recent acquisition of the domain names, www.nihoa.com.au and www.nihoa.com.cn as well as online book and healthcare retail sites, New Tel hopes to capture new markets in both mainland China, and among ethnic Chinese in other parts of the world.

The spoils of this new acquisition also include the successful www.nihao2000.com site which was launched as a Chinese language information service for the 2000 Olympic games. During October the site reportedly received over 45 million hits.

According to New Tel, nihao2000 was initially an international Chinese language site created to deliver news and information to the Chinese community in Australia.

The purchase of the "ni hao" site is in keeping with New Tel's close relationship with the Chinese community in Australia, where the telco has dominated the Australia/China telecommunications marketNew Tel is looking into potential advertising revenues from the recently acquired site.
