Telstra and Entellect team on wireless office

Telstra MobileNet and Entellect Solutions have teamed up to join the wireless mobile office bandwagon.

Mobile Office for WAP (wireless application protocol)-enabled phones allows real-time wireless access to Microsoft's (MS) Outlook and Exchange Server 5.5 and 2000, including e-mail, calendar, contacts, tasks and notes.

The solution is aimed at corporate customers and is in use at three companies in Australia, including Betta Electrical. Trials are being conducted at KPMG and Motorola Australia, with plans for a worldwide implementation if successful.

Verity Byth, leader of the KPMG Consulting Emerging Technologies practice, said the company believes mobile professionals will be the early beneficiaries from WAP applications.

"We're using our current pilot program to evaluate the benefits to our own executive teams."

Michelle Cope, manager marketing and alliances for Entellect Solutions, said other groupware programs will be available early next year, and a new version of the solution will also be launched next year to allow users to access their Outlook program from anywhere in the world.

Telstra general manager business solutions, Doug Reid also confirmed that Mobile Office will support other e-mail package applications in the future.

"Microsoft was the first product available as it is a popular mail and office product," Reid said.

Entellect is also working with Microsoft Australia.

The arrangement ensures that Mobile Office will become a Microsoft BackOffice certified product.

Using any WAP mobile device, the solution offers users the ability to send, receive, forward and reply to MS Outlook e-mails, including the ability to view attachments and forward them to a fax machine.

Short message service (SMS) notifications can also be sent to any GSM mobile phone.
