Brisbane Council, Telstra Set Up Shop

Brisbane City Council has formed a partnership with Telstra to establish an Internet portal as a one-stop-shop for the city's residents.

In an Australian first, the eBrisbane project will provide a single online entry point on the Internet for the city's information, products and services.

Free e-mail will be offered to Brisbane residents, businesses and community groups as well as online shopping and e-commerce. This is in addition to tourist information, news updates and weather forecasts.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Jim Soorley said it will give the city an "information edge".

"Not only will it make us a major player in the information economy it will tackle the growing digital divide by providing greater access to the Internet," he said.
