NTT DoCoMo Confirms AT&T, KG Deals

NTT DoCoMo Inc., Japan's leading cellular phone operator, will take a 16 percent stake in AT&T Wireless Group Inc., a unit of AT&T, in a deal valued at US$9.8 billion, the companies said in a joint statement last week. NTT DoCoMo also announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire a 20 percent stake in Taiwanese mobile phone operator KG Telecommunications Co. Ltd., in a deal valued at US$516 million. Both deals are designed to further NTT DoCoMo's efforts at making WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) a worldwide standard for 3G (third-generation) wireless networks.
