Microsoft fires off salvo in ASP battle

Launching its Australian ASP offering yesterday Microsoft Australia said it would take on arch-rival Oracle by providing competitive value and pricing for its partners.

Kevin Rodrigo, Microsoft's network solutions group manager, said its commercial applications services provider (ASP) pricing program for partners offers a wide range of licensing options to suit the hosting environment.

The licensing program was piloted for nine months before going live and was undertaken with Microsoft's key partners including Cable & Wireless Optus, Peakhour, Telstra, Tequinox, Unisys and WebCentral.

The ASP partners will host the applications for end users and simply pay Microsoft for usage.

Rodrigo said this allows the ASP partner to hold the licence and provide end users with a single, monthly bill regardless of the number of Microsoft applications they use.

In the enterprise space another option is for the user to maintain traditional licensing and outsource the management of software to the ASP on a Named User or per CPU basis.

Both arrangements can also be mixed depending on end-user requirements and ASP partners can offer subscriber-based software for Microsoft Office, BackOffice and Exchange Server.
