Unisys cuts eight Australian staff

Unisys' Australian operation has confirmed that eight locals also felt the sword after US reports last week stated the hardware vendor and services company would be culling 2000 staff to arrest declining revenue and profits.

Unisys Australia spokesperson Alan Smith said local staff were mostly "unaffected" by the market pressures affecting US operations and driving this round of cost-cutting initiatives.

Smith wouldn't divulge just where in the organisation the eight jobs were lost, but said the figure was less than 1 per cent of the 1400 strong local workforce. Globally, the cuts were around 6 per cent.

Unisys chairman and CEO Lawrence Weinbach last week claimed that "low-margin hardware acquisition businesses" were dragging the chain and Unisys' future lay in Internet and e-commerce based solutions.

Smith claimed that in Australia, Unisys is well on the way to fulfilling the chairman's vision of a future based on e-commerce. He said it is already fully focused on services and technologies where a value-add can be provided for customers.http://www.arnnet.com.au
