Connect launches convergence service

Connect Internet Solutions has launched a new service offering the integration of voice, video and data over a single Internet Protocol (IP) network.

AAPT subsidiary, Connect, claims its new Connect Convergent IP (CCIP) network will lower costs by removing infrastructure duplication while offering an array of new applications.

“Cost savings will be an initial driver but the real benefits are all about the additional applications available through having the phone system integrated with the IP network,” Connect group product manager, Jeff Putt, said.

“There are all sorts of neat features, such as having voicemail delivered as email, that improve collaboration while reducing costs.”

Connect is making the service available on one- or two-year contracts and is bundling handsets into the service rate.

"We realise CCIP is asking people to change the way they work and felt offering it as a service was the best way to minimise that change,” Putt said. “This keeps up front expenditure down and makes it easier to justify.”

Connect has been trialling CCIP for the past 12 months, with Putt admitting it had come across some configuration issues that it had not foreseen. It has now appointed Fujitsu as an integration partner to offer support “beyond the router”.

A large educational institution in Melbourne, which Putt was unwilling to unveil just yet, is planning to launch a network of up to 50 handsets in the near future. If all goes to plan, Putt said the number of handsets on the network could reach 2000 within nine months.

He also highlighted professional services and retail as potential “sweet spot” vertical markets but said Connect would be targeting large and small organisations with multiple offices spread around the country whether they had 10 or 10,000 handsets.
