C&W to invest $US1 billion in Euro network

Cable & Wireless yesterday detailed plans for building up an integrated voice and data network that spans Europe.

C&W plans to invest $US1 billion over five years in the network, which will link more than 40 European cities in 13 countries, according to a statement from C&W.

The London-based telecommunications company also plans to have built a high-speed ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) backbone network, linking 10 cities C&W will also build fibre optic links between 18 European cities and plans to step up its investments in IP (Internet Protocol) technology, the company said.

C&W also will open offices in both Frankfurt and Düsseldorf this year to provide voice and data services to the German market over the network.
