The architect as conjurer: Lars Spuybroek on digital architecture

<p>The kind of advanced computing magic that has conjured convincing imaginary worlds on film is also shaping the real word in the practice of architects like Rotterdam-based Lars Spuybroek, who will speak on the digital reinvention of architecture at the University of Technology, Sydney on Friday 3 December.</p>
<p>In the final lecture of the UTS Architecture Lecture Series 2004, Spuybroek will reveal the inspirations, insights, and techniques that have allowed his studio NOX to transfer highly experimental "virtual" concepts to solid reality.</p>
<p>In the avant-garde of digital architects, NOX is among the few trailblazers to have completed built projects – supple structures that before the advent of large-scale processing power, digital modelling, and computer-aided manufacturing would have been considered unbuildable.</p>
<p>Today such work is taken seriously on an international scale as the possibilities for construction and spatial innovation attain new levels of feasibility.</p>
<p>Lars Spuybroek established his studio in Rotterdam in the early 1990s. He has taught and lectured at numerous universities around the world, including Columbia University and the University of Kassel in Germany, where he is currently head of digital design.</p>
<p>Recent NOX projects include an interactive tower for the Dutch city of Doetinchem (D-Tower), "a house where sounds live" (Son-O-house), an interactive office building in Stratford-upon-Avon, England (Soft Office), and a multiple complex of cultural buildings in Lille, France.</p>
