CBA outsources online system upgrade

The Commonwealth Bank is upgrading its online banking system, outsourcing the project work to an IBM Business Consulting Services and EDS consortium.

The upgrading of CBA's Internet banking service will increase capacity to support future growth and expand online services, CBA group executive, retail banking services, Hugh Harley said on Monday.

Under a multimillion dollar agreement, IBM Business Consulting Services will supply, integrate and support the Web banking product behind the upgrade. Eontec, an Ireland-based developer of Java-based Internet banking software, will provide the online banking products.

EDS, CBA's existing IT services provider, will supply infrastructure services for the upgrade, developing linkages to other banks' systems, operating the new online system, and ensuring it integrates with CBA's architectural and operational strategy, said EDS Australia executive director Stuart Bailey.

The new service will go live in the second half of 2004.
