IBM Corp. in New York announced this week the establishment of a center in Bangalore to provide technology design services for advanced chips, cards and systems to companies in Asia.
The skills to be created at the center, which will operate as part of IBM's Engineering & Technology Services (E&TS) division, will be in the areas of ASIC (application specific integrated circuits) logic design, physical design, verification, mechanical design, server system firmware, card design, and embedded and application software expertise, especially in Linux. The total new staffing for the center would be driven by the volume of contracts, according to informed sources.
"The India center will enable IBM to leverage a vast and talented Indian IT talent pool, competent in VLSI (very large scale integrated circuits) and embedded software design to create quality and innovative solutions for our customers," said Uday Shukla, a director of IBM's laboratory group in India.
One of IBM's two subsidiaries in Bangalore, IBM Global Services India Pvt Ltd., already had a group of about 120 engineers that designed ASICs and embedded software such as embedded Linux. The work at the center was however, until now, primarily for the parent company. The scope of the group's activity is now being extended from component design to system design and other activities, as part of IBM's Engineering & Technology Services (E&TS) division, whose business is to offer a range of product design services to customers.
The new center in Bangalore will coordinate and leverage regional engineering, research and technology design services delivery skills from several IBM locations to design a wide variety of new electronic gear for customers, according to an IBM statement. These designs will range from complex chips to entire systems.
Service offerings from this new business will fall into four basic categories -- component solutions, system solutions, technology consulting, and mission transfer services. The component solutions business will include system-on-a-chip design services, and custom circuit design services, while system solutions includes system architecture and design services, and power, packaging and cooling solutions. The center will also offer technology consulting such as intellectual property (IP) management consulting, manufacturing consulting, verification, and on demand "e-design" services delivered over the Internet, besides mission transfer services whereby IBM takes over entire engineering missions from their electronics customers.
