Telstra is finalising a restructure of IT staffing with the new management team to be announced by the end of May.
Late last year Telstra announced the amalgamation of a range of IT functions across its business units into one IT services unit.
Telstra chief financial officer David Moffat said the aim is to bring new products to market faster, leverage existing knowledge and develop new knowledge based skills.
The telco employs 2,400 internal IT staff which accounts for only half of the total number employed by Telstra.
As a result Moffat said it was time Telstra focussed on training its IT staff from within admitting the telco probably hasn't developed its skill set "as well as we could have."
"What we all have to do as a community, and we're part of the IT community, is we have to raise the skill levels," he said.
"We've got to look at worldwide standards and recognise we can't be an average performer as an IT community - we've got a role to play in that, but so does everybody else."
