EDS to link purchasing and design software

Electronic Data Systems Corp. (EDS) is integrating its product lifecycle management (PLM) software with its procurement management software, to allow companies to better align the processes of creating products and of purchasing the necessary materials.

By integrating the eBreviate eSourcing 5.0i procurement management software into the Teamcenter PLM platform, EDS will let purchasing employees gain an early understanding of their company's product design process, such as product specifications and material requirements, two EDS officials said Monday.

Linking the engineering and procurement teams early in the product design process can lead to better purchasing decisions that can lower costs, improve product quality and accelerate manufacturing, which ultimately can lead to more sales and wider profits, they said.

Too often, the purchasing team is involved late in the product development process, when key decisions have been made that limit the company's options in purchasing the materials needed to build the products in question, they said.

EDS, in Plano, Texas, expects to ship the integrated product suite in the third quarter. Pricing information wasn't immediately available.

This initiative involves the collaboration of two EDS units: the PLM division, which is in charge of Teamcenter, and A.T. Kearney, the company's consulting division, which manages the eBreviate software.

EDS made the announcement at the PLM World annual conference in Anaheim, California.
