Microsoft takes aussie IP worldwide

Australian-owned and operated Expert Information Services has developed an extension to Microsoft’s .Net application development framework that has so impressed Microsoft techies, the vendor now wants to take the software to the world on Expert’s behalf.

Expert is a Gold certified Microsoft partner — a status that entitles it to gain early access to much of Microsoft’s code. The locally-based company shares a deep technical relationship with the vendor that sees it provide much of the compliance testing for the vendor’s products in Australia.

For several years Expert’s team of 150 Microsoft certified professionals and 70 Microsoft architects worked on an extension to Microsoft’s DNA architecture, prior to the vendor’s move to .Net. Expert developers took this work and migrated it to the .Net platform — building an application development framework that allows developers to build and manage large, scalable applications for the Microsoft platform.

Expert put the framework into practice to build what is considered the largest Microsoft-powered application in the Southern Hemisphere — a call centre solution for Telstra Retail customers. This system, based on the new Expert.Net framework, can support 5000 concurrent users and 15 million hits across its 21 mainframe systems in a single day.

Microsoft sent several of its engineers from its Redmond headquarters to Australia to see the software at work. “They were tremendously impressed by what they saw,” general manager of strategic alliances for Expert Information Systems, Ivan Gomez, said. “They were looking to build something similar themselves for the telco market.”

Rather than build or acquire such a framework, Microsoft and Expert have signed an open ended agreement whereby the vendor’s direct technical services force will recommend Expert’s software during proof of concept work with its own customers.
