Sybase Inc. has completed the acquisition of AvantGo Inc., a maker of software for mobile devices, Sybase said Wednesday.
AvantGo is now part of iAnywhere Solutions, a subsidiary of Dublin, California, Sybase that sells mobile, remote, embedded and workgroup databases and mobile middleware, Sybase said in a statement.
The cash deal, valued at US$38 million when announced in December, will help Sybase's position in the market for mobile middleware for enterprises, and expand the reach of iAnywhere into the wireless arena, Sybase has said.
AvantGo makes software that is used to synchronize handheld devices such as PDAs (personal digital assistants) with PCs. Other AvantGo products link mobile devices to CRM (customer relationship management) applications.
AvantGo's popular, free "My AvantGo" service for downloading Web pages to handheld devices will be continued and expanded. Among other things, Sybase will offer a product that will enable companies to develop internal My AvantGo channels for use as private mobile portals, Sybase has said.
AvantGo on Jan. 29 reported a net loss of US$16.3 million for the year 2002 on revenue of US$19.9 million. This compares to a loss of US$56.2 million and $24 million in revenue in 2001, the company said.
