Telstra has launched a new business grade DSL service in the hopes of strengthening its broadband services portfolio and acquiring a slice of the medium enterprise pie.
The business grade service, based on symmetrical DSL (SHDSL or symmetrical high bit rate digital subscriber line) technology, will allow customers equal upload and download data speeds at either 512Kbps, 1.5Mbps or 2Mbps.
Telstra data sales and solutions managing director, Paul Geason, said one of the key benefits of the new service would be data throughput guarantees independent of Internet traffic conditions.
“Data is guaranteed and the service is built on Telstra's proven business data platforms,” he said.
A range of new additional access options for Telstra's IP solutions such as IP WAN, IP Telephony service and its Internet Direct service will also be available as part of the new offering.
A spokesperson for Telstra said the SHDSL service represented a “missing link in Telstra’s suite of business products”. These ranged from business ISDN and ADSL services to frame relay.
The SHDSL service is aimed at enterprises with more than 50 employees, that maintain multiple sites around Australia. Prices for the service will depend on the number of sites maintained by the enterprise, as well as the speed of the service for which the enterprise signs up.
For example, an organisation with four metropolitan sites connected point-to-point that registers for a 512Kbps SHDSL service would incur a monthly fee of $2650, the spokesperson said.
Business SHDSL customers will also have access to unlimited data downloads.
About 65 Telstra exchanges are now enabled for the Business DSL service across all Australian capital cities. A further 175 exchanges will be equipped by the end of the year. The service is also available in major regional centres including Townsville, Bendigo, Dubbo, Albany, Mt Gambier, Alice Springs and Launceston.
