Database and applications vendor Oracle has confirmed that it had laid off an unspecified number of employees, but declined to offer details about the decision.
A spokeswoman called the move a "restructuring" in the global marketing department that was announced earlier this week after the appointment of executive vice president Chuck Phillips as head of the unit. Oracle had anticipated layoffs after Phillips took over following the abrupt departure of former chief marketing officer Mark Jarvis, she said.
"The changes are part of the normal course of fine-tuning an organisation," the spokeswoman said in a statement. She said more information about the cuts would be divulged as part of the company's quarterly earning announcements in early December.
