TPG tops Netflix speed rankings

Australian traffic has beaten Netflix's expectations

TPG has taken top spot in Netflix's inaugural comparison of the Internet speeds achieved by the streaming service's Australian customers.

TPG customers accessing the video-on-demand service achieved an average speed of 3.63 megabits per second, according to the April rankings.

The average Australian download speed was 2.82Mbps.

Netflix provides the rankings for each country it operates in and updates them monthly.

TPG was followed by Optus (3.27Mbps), iiNet (3.24Mbps), Primus (3.03Mbps), Exetel (2.56Mbps) and M2 subsidiary Dodo (2.29Mbps). Telstra came last in the ranking, averaging 2.23Mbps across fibre, cable and DSL connections to the video service.

The overall speed ranking for Australia places it 18th out of the 29 countries Netflix monitors.

Netflix launched in Australia in March.

"Performance for Australian ISPs was impacted by consumer demand exceeding the forecasts Netflix provided," a Netflix blog entry stated.

"We are working closely with these ISPs and expect performance to improve in the coming months."

Netflix recommends a 1.5Mbps connection for its service, and a 3Mbps broadband service for SD quality video; 5Mbps or greater is recommended for high-definition video streaming.

Australia traffic from the service has exploded since it officially became available in the country, accounting for a quarter of iiNet's traffic and leading to reports of performance issues for end users.

Leaked research on the use of video-on-demand services in Australia has revealed the service has left its rivals in the dust since launch.

The federal government yesterday confirmed that online services such as Netflix will be forced to charge the GST.
