Sun Microsystems on Tuesday offered a processor bump for its Sun Fire V480 server family. The company is now shipping its new 1.2GHz UltraSparc III processor in the high end four-way V480 model, Sun said.
The V480 comes in three configurations: a two-processor machine with 4G bytes of memory, a four-processor system with 8G bytes of memory, and a four-processor system with 16G bytes of memory. The faster processor will be available only in the 16G-byte system, said Kathy Pries, Sun's group marketing manager for volume system products. Pricing for that system remains unchanged at US$26,000.
The company has no current plans to upgrade its two other V480s, which will continue to ship with 1.05GHz processors, Pries said.
"At some point we'll probably start migrating to the 1.2 (GHz processor) in the other configurations, but at this point we think it's most advantageous to customers who need that large memory configuration," she said.
