Telstra has touted data sovereignty as a major benefit of an announced cloud environment custom-built for government.
Launching in the first half of 2015, the Telstra Government Cloud has been designed to help federal, state and local governments meet their cloud-first policy objectives across both unclassified and protected data, said Telstra.
“Importantly, Telstra’s Government Cloud will provide confidence that the data is safe and hosted in Australia,” said Erez Yarkoni, executive director of cloud for Telstra Global Enterprise and Services.
“It will also help enable the public sector to achieve greater efficiency and generate more value from its ICT investments.”
In October, the Australian government mandated a cloud-first policy for agencies. The updated cloud computing policy said government agencies must adopt cloud where it is "fit for purpose, provides adequate protection of data and delivers value for money" when obtaining new ICT services or replacing existing services.
By delivering a cloud platform designed for government, Telstra aims to tighten its relationship with an important customer segment, he said.
Telstra government customers include the Department of Defence, Department of Human Services and the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service.

“In line with our own cloud strategy to offer increased flexibility and choice, this new, highly secure cloud platform will help enable governments to be leaders in the use of cloud services and provide opportunities for continued innovation and collaboration.”
