SuSE Linux names new CEO

SuSE Linux AG has appointed Richard Seibt to replace Gerhard Burtscher as the company's new chairman of the executive board and chief executive officer, the company said Monday in a statement.

Seibt is the latest in a string of CEO replacements in the German software sector. Last month Microsoft Deutschland GmbH and Software AG appointed new heads to help resuscitate sales.

Currently a board member at United Internet AG, Seibt, 50, will join SuSE on Jan. 20, 2003. He brings 20 years of experience at IBM Corp., where he held executive positions in business development, sales and marketing in Europe and the U.S.

IBM had made support of Linux a crucial component of its product strategy.

Burtscher, whom SuSE referred to as a "turn-around specialist" in the statement, joined the company in December 2001.
