Android smartphones and tablets now get the most mobile ad traffic worldwide, beating out iPhones and iPads for the first time in the first quarter of 2014.
The numbers, reported by mobile ad network provider Opera Mediaworks, show Android got 42.8% of mobile ad impressions in the first quarter, compared with 38.2% for iOS devices.
While iOS devices still get 52% of the ad revenue, Android devices have jumped to 33.5%, up from nearly 27% in the first quarter of 2013.
Apple's fall from dominance in ad impressions seemed inevitable as Android steadily grabbed market share in the number of Android devices shipped in recent quarters. In the fourth quarter of 2013, IDC said Android smartphones comprised 78% of all smartphones shipped, compared to 17.6% for iPhones.
Samsung has emerged as the largest vendor of Android smartphones and tablets and in the fourth quarter of 2013 shipped 29% of all smartphones, according to IDC.
Opera Mediaworks said Samsung accounted for 60% of all Android device ad impressions in the first quarter.
The mobile ad business is still driven heavily by U.S.-based consumers. Users of smartphones and tablets in the U.S. accounted for more than half of all global mobile ad traffic with 50.6%; Asia Pacific countries were second, with nearly 23%; and European countries had 13%.
