Virgin Mobile matches Vodafone double-data offer

New contracts required for existing customers

Virgin Mobile will double data for a limited time on selected postpaid plans, following a similar offer by Vodafone Hutchison Australia.

From today until January 13, Virgin said customers on its $60 plan can receive 3GB of data monthly, up from 1.5GB, while customers on the $90 plan can receive 6GB per month. The deal is also good on the equivalent BYO plans under which customers pay $10 less per month if they supply their own phone.

In addition, Virgin said it would offer the Samsung Galaxy S4 for $3 per month on the telco’s $60 plan. All the plans offer 4G speeds over the Optus LTE network.

The double data offer is not available on Virgin’s prepaid, mobile broadband or any other postpaid plans. Existing customers seeking to take the offer must sign a new contract or upgrade to the eligible plans, a Virgin Mobile spokeswoman said.

The offer is similar to one pitched by Vodafone earlier this month. Until January 3, Vodafone said it will double data for all month-to-month voice plans costing $45 and above, and all one and two-year contract plans of $60 or more.

Both telcos plan to return to selling smaller data limits after the promotion ends.
