Skills gap hangs on despite jobs drop

Despite a drop in the number of IT jobs being advertised Australia continues to face a considerable IT skills shortage, according to Paul Bassat, CEO of Seek Communications.

He rejects claims of a "slump" in the IT sector, saying that people with IT experience, even just a couple of years, are still often taking their pick from a number of offers.

"Salaries may have dropped a little, but I think it's fair to say that this has been reflected right across the Australian job market, not just the IT sector."

Seek has extended its Internet employment site with the launch of a site specifically for IT professionals, called Seek IT.

As well as job vacancies, Seek IT will also offer IT specific tools and career resources to assist with overall career management.

The site currently offers over 15,000 jobs, and other features include IT certification exams, skills tests and a salary indicator. Seek IT follows the launch in March of Seek Screen, a collection of screening and testing tools to assist recruiters and job seekers in the shortlisting process.
