AARNet to link to international peer groups

The Australian Academic and Research Network (AARNet) has acquired a 'three-drop ring' on the Southern Cross Cable Network (SCCN) and will use this capacity to interconnect to the overseas advanced research and education networks.

It said its network will have drop points on the SCCN in Sydney, Kahe Point (Hawaii) and Hillsboro (Oregon, US).

From Hillsboro, the group has arranged to backhaul capacity to the Pacific Northwest GigaPoP (PNWGP) in Seattle.

PNWGP is one of the Internet2 GigaPoPops.

AARNet officials said the group has also signed agreements with PNWGP to co-locate equipment there and to use their facilities to interconnect with other advanced research and education networks.
