The Australian Communications Authority (ACA) has announced that it has received seven applications for the third generation (3G) spectrum auction.

ACA chairman Tony Shaw said applications had been received from AAPT Spectrum (ACT) Pty Ltd, CKW Wireless Pty Ltd, Hutchison Telecommunications Australia Limited, Optus Mobile Pty Ltd, Telstra 3G Spectrum Holdings Pty Ltd, Vodafone Pacific Pty Ltd and 3G Investments (Australia) Pty Ltd.

The auction of the radio frequency spectrum licences in the 2 GHz band is expected to commence in mid-March, following the completion of the registration process.

Successful bidders will be allocated licences for a 15-year term commencing in October 2002.

The applicants have until 11am on Monday 19 February 2001 to confirm their participation and to make the 'eligibility payment', which is calculated on the basis of the amount of spectrum they hope to acquire.

The companies will also have to pay either a performance payment or submit a Deed of Financial Security to participate in the auction.
