BMC upgrades Patrol Express

BMC Software Inc. is preparing a new edition of Patrol Express, the lower-cost, scaled-down version of its IT infrastructure monitoring software.

Patrol Express 3.0's enhancements include new Web transaction monitoring features: Using the software, administrators can measure Internet latency and track Web transaction performance from an end-user perspective. Also in the new version are new notification and alert capabilities. A "Critical Alarm" state allows an IT department to designate what criteria must be met for a service failure to be considered urgent, allowing administrators to more quickly respond to serious situations.

Launched last August, Patrol Express is intended as an easily deployable, "lightweight" management product. The software is agentless, meaning it does not require software to be installed on the devices being monitored. BMC's Patrol software is aimed at increasing application availability and reducing the costs associated with bottlenecks and outages across multiple systems.

Patrol Express 3.0 is slated for a worldwide release the first week of August, according to a spokeswoman for Houston-based BMC. Patrol Express licenses start at US$15,000 for the central management component, plus an additional fee for each monitored element such as network devices and applications.
