Gateway bloodbath continues

The bloodbath continues for computer giant Gateway which closed its operations in Australia last September.

America's fourth-largest computer maker, Gateway has announced it will eliminate a further 2250 jobs in the US amid reduced sales and shrinking market share.

This includes the closure of offices in southern California, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Colorado and 19 of its country stores in nine states.

Less than four months ago Gateway cut its 24,600 global staff by more than 5000 including the closure of offices in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan.

Like others in the PC hardware business Gateway was hard hit by the recent economic downturn.

While Dell aggressively increased market share in 2001, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard and Gateway had a particularly tough time in the US market.
